Lot 1108
1867 Shield Nickel. No rays. NGC graded MS-66. A brilliant untoned gem example. This beautiful coin exhibits the silver mirror-like luster on a well presented planchet that is fully appreciated by collectors who expect nothing less in the grade. Elusive as a Gem and better. There is one slight deviation in the sharp relief seen, mainly in the centers of the shield where the design failed to completely fill the dies. (A thin die break left of the date, unusual for a Proof, also attests to the stress placed upon the steel dies by the hard nickel alloy of these.) Pop 27; 1 finer in 67 Star. (PCGS # 3794) .
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.

Lot 1110
1870 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 63. Old green holder. The surfaces glisten with fresh nickel-silvery color projecting through the natural toning, beauty that will make your head spin. Especially bold strike. Only a few faint flyspecks in the lower obverse. (Die polishing has caused weakness at the tops of some of the letters on the reverse, such as the D, S, S, F and R as well as the bottom of the S in CENTS, a trait that is seen on many Proofs of the 1870s.) Only 1,000+ Proofs struck (PCGS # 3824) .
Estimated Value $250 - 275.

Lot 1111
1871 Shield Nickel. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. Mostly untoned. The mirror surfaces ripple with original flash and sparkle. What's more, the coin is virtually bright and silvery with only a thin veil of patina. Finally, as to the key devices, these show a very convincing impression as left by the recoil of the crisp, razor-sharp dies. The 1871 is one of the slightly scarcer issues, we might add, in Proof as well as the business strikes this year. 960+ Proofs struck. Pop 6; 22 finer; 11 in 65; 8 in 66; 3 in 67. (PCGS # 3825) .
Estimated Value $450 - 500.

Lot 1112
1872 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 66. A crisply struck Shield nickel glowing with Proof-fresh glow from the fields, the devices struck with fine detail, and not at all deficient. This is one of the slightly scarcer Proofs from the early 1870s. Equestrian enthusiasts will remember the year from their history lessons as -- we are not making this up -- The Great Epizootic of 1872. Only 950+ Proofs struck (PCGS # 3826) .
Estimated Value $850 - 900.

Lot 1114
1875 Shield Nickel. NGC graded Proof 66. A brilliant light golden spotless gem. In this example, illustrative of the gem quality seen in its grade class, we find iridescent surfaces, smoothly reflective. Further, it being a well-struck example with good details, it has no bothersome weak areas in the design of the shield or stars. 700+ Proofs struck. Pop 19; 1 finer; in 67. (PCGS # 3829) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.

Lot 1115
1875 Shield Nickel. NGC graded Proof 64. Nice light toning. Sparkling golden gray with strong combination mirror-frosted underlying luster. Nicely struck; not fully so on a few of the leaf veins, but close enough to warrant individual mention. A scarce year in this brief series that ran from 1866 until 1883. Proofs were issued every year. 700+ Proofs struck. Pop 104; 79 finer; 59 in 65; 19 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 3829) .

1878 Shield Nickel. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. A dazzling untoned gem. A white, mint-fresh example, as crisp and glossy as when it was first released from to the Treasury for distribution. Most Shield nickels of this date are struck with somewhat frosty fields; some are much flashier; and collectors, true to their tradition, wish that all could be like this nice appearing example exhibiting fine detail to all the high points and sparkling fields. 2,350 Proofs minted. Pop 9; 3 finer in 67. (PCGS # 3832) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,400.

Lot 1117
1878 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 65. Nice even toning. From one side to the other the luminous nickel-smooth luster glows with satiny brilliance typical of the 1878 Proof-only strikes. All this is perhaps obvious from the photos. What we need to emphasize further is that the strike is customarily crisp and detailed for the issue with the usual sharp metal flows into the deepest recesses of the dies on both sides. A gem! 2,350 Proofs minted (PCGS # 3832) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.

Lot 1118
1882 Shield Nickel. PCI graded Proof 67. A hint of light golden toning. Baking bright luster beneath the natural color on smooth, mirror-deep surfaces. A touch of weakness is now and then found on a few of the leaves on the obverse, even on Proofs, but here it is probably that the dies were spaced exactly right to insure strong metal flow in that area; the obverse details are clear, razor-sharp, and, in summation, Superb! 3,100 proofs struck.
Estimated Value $900 - 950.

Lot 1119
1882 Shield Nickel. NGC graded Proof 66. Delicately toned. Lustrous but clear nickel-gray and faint russet smoothness dominates the surfaces of this attractive nickel; a coin with a particular light sky-blue glow to the reverse fields. 3,100 Proofs minted. Pop 202; 40 finer; 1 in 66 Star; 35 in 67; 4 in 68. (PCGS # 3837) .

Lot 1120
1882 Shield Nickel. NGC graded Proof 66. 3,100 proofs minted. Radiant and exhibiting pale toning color atop the moon-glow nickel-gray base. A very pleasing example of this later Proof. Sometimes on the Shield nickel issue, the devices that were left by the dies are short of the required precision due to weak die pressure or the hard nickel alloy, but we find the opposite to be the case here, everything is finely detailed, including the centers of the leaves and the star radials. Pop 202; 40 finer; 1 in 66 Star; 35 in 67; 4 in 68. (PCGS # 3837) .
